As long as I can remember, I was engaged in business. Growing up, I didn't attend public school and need to raise money but signed up to do door-to-door catalog sales anyway from an ad in the back of my Archie comic books. The difference is, mine paid me cash money. Prior to that, I made things like beaded bracelets and braved the neighborhood dogs to walk the 2 miles circle in the rural neighborhood we lived in.
My family is "flexitarian," eating mostly plant-based foods, and I have always been a cheerleader in the natural and better-for-you space, enjoying the rising mainstream tide of plant-based, dairy-free, and low sugar over the last 15 years. When my husband and I were first looking for foods like that in the Piney Woods of Northeast Texas in 2011, I will tell you, times were tough, and the pickings were slim.
When I got into public accounting, I got the most excited over consumer products clients - someone with a physical item I could find in a store, or buy online. The connection to real life, for me, can't be beat. I love the idea that a founder can now start a brand out of their kitchen, with relatively little capital, and hire someone to manufacturer their product, versus the olden days where one needed to build their own factory. I love the accounting puzzles that omnichannel CPG requires - inventory costing, and the matching required between sales, fulfillment, and cash.
